What Is Individual Psychotherapy?

Individual psychotherapy is also called individual therapy or talk therapy. It is one-on-one therapy sessions where you and a psychiatrist, psychologist, or therapist work through personal concerns and issues relating to your addiction that affect your emotions and mental health.

Individual psychotherapy can help increase confidence, build self-esteem, and make you feel more willing to share your experiences with family, friends, and in group sessions with your peers. Other benefits of individual psychotherapy can include:

  • Obtain a better understanding of yourself
  • Uncover underlying issues from your past contributing to your addiction
  • Change unhealthy thoughts, behaviors, and emotions into positive ones
  • Develop coping strategies that work for you
  • Identify and uncover triggers that could cause relapse
  • Improve impulse control and emotional regulation
  • Rebuild damaged relationships
  • Build new, healthy relationships
  • Process and overcome personal concerns like trauma and grief

Family and friends may also be invited to join you during individual therapy in Massachusetts when it is relevant to your recovery and treatment objectives.

Types of Psychotherapy We Provide at Lake Avenue Recovery

At Lake Avenue Recovery, we offer a variety of psychotherapy treatment options to support individuals on their recovery journey. Our experienced therapists provide evidence-based therapies personalized to meet the unique needs of each of our clients. Some of the types of psychotherapy we offer include:

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy) is one of the most widely used therapies when treating alcohol and substance use disorders. It helps individuals discover negative thoughts, emotions, and behaviors contributing to their addiction. It helps them better understand how to change their negative views into positive behaviors.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy) combines cognitive behavioral techniques with skills development to help individuals manage intense emotions, develop mindfulness practices, and improve relationships.

Motivational Interviewing

MI (motivational interviewing) is a form of therapy used to help individuals overcome their negative views and reluctance to recovery and change. It helps people explore motivations that lead toward healthier behaviors and achieving short-term goals and objectives.

Behavioral Therapy

Behavioral therapy incorporates several different types of therapeutic modalities. Its objective is to focus on specific behaviors and help individuals learn new approaches to changing those behaviors. When combined with other types of psychotherapy, it can be effective in treating alcohol and substance use disorders

Substance Abuse Counseling

Substance abuse counseling helps people understand the underlying causes and reasons for their addictive behaviors and addiction. It can also help identify relapse triggers. Individuals learn healthy coping strategies to address triggers and cravings to help them achieve long-term recovery.

Programs That Provide Individual Therapy in Massachusetts

Lake Avenue Recovery offers several different outpatient addiction treatment programs that provide individual therapy in Massachusetts, including:

  • Day Treatment: Our day treatment is designed for individuals who need a highly structured and intensive form of treatment but do not require 24/7 monitoring found with residential programs. Participants meet daily and are allowed to return home or to a sober living facility in the evenings.

  • IOP: Our IOP (intensive outpatient program) is for individuals who still need an intensive form of addiction treatment but have other commitments, like work and family responsibilities, which prevent them from attending full-day sessions. Participants meet on specific days and times that best work with their schedules. IOPs are also a step-down level of care for people transitioning from Day Treatment.

  • Evening IOP: Our evening IOP offers the same level of care and treatment as our daytime IOP, except sessions are held in the evenings. This provides even more flexibility to work, attend school, or address other daytime obligations.

  • OP: Our outpatient program (OP) is the most flexible in terms of scheduling and when you will meet for sessions. When first transitioning from an IOP, most people meet a few times each week and gradually move to once-a-week sessions.

How Many Times a Week Do I See My Therapist in Each Level of Care?

Most people will meet once per week with their therapists in each level of care. As our clients transition to outpatient therapy, they will continue to meet on a weekly basis. However, if there are new concerns or issues, or you do not feel once a week is sufficient for your needs, you can always request additional sessions.

What to Expect in an Individual Therapy Session?

It is understandable you want to know what to expect in individual therapy in Massachusetts. Our psychotherapy sessions provide a secure, safe, private, and confidential setting for you to share your issues, concerns, and struggles with addiction with one of our licensed therapists. They will help you focus on the issues you are uncomfortable sharing during group sessions.

Initially, your therapists will ask questions about your, your addiction history, and your treatment goals and objectives. They do this to help build rapport and trust with you, as well as work with you to develop a personalized therapy plan to address your specific needs.

Part of your therapy sessions will involve creating short and long-term objectives and goals. During sessions, you will review your progress on those and make adjustments as needed. Your therapists may also give you specific tasks to focus on during the week before your next scheduled session.
