Bipolar I Disorder: Causes a person to have both depressive and manic episodes. The depressive episodes last at least two weeks, and the manic episodes last at least seven days.
Bipolar II Disorder: Causes a person to have depressive mood cycles. They may also have hypomanic episodes, but these are less extreme than the ones that happen with Bipolar I disorder.
Cyclothymic Disorder: Also called cyclothymia, it causes an individual to experience hypomanic and depressive episodes for at least a two-year period. The depressive symptoms are less severe than the ones that occur with other types of bipolar disorder.
Rapid Cycling: This causes a person to experience at least four mood episodes during a one-year period.
Bipolar Disorder Not Otherwise Specified: This diagnosis is used when a person does not fall strictly into the category of other types of bipolar disorder as identified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
