What is MassHealth?

In Massachusetts, Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program are combined into a single program called MassHealth. It provides health benefits and helps in the payment of them for those who qualify for the program. Depending on the individual, MassHealth may help pay or directly pay for part of all of the person’s health insurance premiums. This provides access to many vital medical treatments that include visits to doctors and dentists, prescription medications, outpatient and residential facilities, hospital stays, and other healthcare options.

Does MassHealth Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

MassHealth does cover drug and alcohol rehab under the umbrella of its behavioral health services. This includes addiction to alcohol, prescription drugs, and illegal drugs. Behavioral healthcare includes treatment for substance use disorders and mental health disorders. Many treatment facilities provide coverage for both conditions at the same time as part of their dual diagnosis treatment.

How Do I Qualify for MassHealth Insurance?

MassHealth insurance is available to qualifying seniors, children, families, and people with disabilities who live in Massachusetts. Those interested in taking advantage of MassHealth rehab centers must meet some basic requirements in order to enroll in the program. These include:

Residency: The person must live or intend to reside in Massachusetts, with or without a fixed address, or have moved to Massachusetts for a work commitment or to find employment.

Citizenship or Immigration Status: The person must be able to provide verifiable proof of their citizenship or immigration status. MassHealth may verify information provided by conducting information matches with federal and state agencies. Someone who cannot provide the requested information may receive fewer or no benefits. Anyone who is not clear on their immigration status should contact MassHealth to determine their eligibility.

Financial: The person must meet specific financial requirements which are determined by facts such as their modified adjusted gross income and who lives in their household.

If you do not have MassHealth and are interested in applying for it, you can apply online. If you already have MassHealth, make sure to renew it regularly. Every year, MassHealth reviews the accounts of its members to ensure they still qualify for their coverage. If you need to renew or are not sure if you need to do so, visit their Renew Your Coverage page. You can renew online or by calling 844-365-1841 (TDD/TTY: 711). You can use an online account you already established or create a new one.

What Treatment Programs Does MassHealth Cover?

Someone who wants to seek treatment from MassHealth rehab centers can use their coverage for different levels of care. Options to help people overcome substance use disorders include:

Detox

During detox in Massachusetts, the individual is monitored by medical and psychological clinicians to make sure they stay safe as they go through the detox process. This means the person receives any medications necessary to ease their withdrawal symptoms. They often attend therapy sessions to help them learn to deal with their forthcoming emotions.

Residential treatment

Our Residential Treatment program offers a supportive, structured environment where you’ll live at our facility and receive comprehensive care around the clock. This immersive approach provides the focused support you need to address your addiction and start your recovery process effectively.

Outpatient Program

For those who need flexibility, our Outpatient Program allows you to continue living at home while attending therapy and support sessions at Lake Avenue Recovery. This option is perfect if you’re balancing work, school, or other commitments while still needing professional help to overcome your addiction.

Daytime Intensive Outpatient Program

Our Daytime Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is designed for those who need a higher level of care but prefer to return home each evening. With several hours of therapy and support during the day, this program offers intensive treatment while allowing you to manage your daily responsibilities.

Evening Intensive Outpatient Program

If daytime commitments are a concern, our Evening Intensive Outpatient Program offers flexible treatment in the evenings. This program provides intensive therapy and support after work or school, helping you fit recovery into your busy schedule.

Day Treatment

Our Day Treatment is ideal for those who thrive on a structured and routine approach to recovery. It offers our most intensive and comprehensive therapeutic services while allowing you to keep up with and strengthen your social and family commitments. For individuals transitioning from an inpatient setting, Day Treatment provides a perfect balance of independence and a supportive community, helping ease the transition back to daily life.

Coverage typically includes prescription drugs used to treat withdrawal symptoms or that treat co-occurring mental health disorders like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and more. A MassHealth representative can help a member understand their options. As well, many treatment facilities offer free insurance checks to help people know what levels of care are covered.

Why Choose Lake Ave Recovery?

Lake Avenue Recovery created our MassHealth rehab center based on the concept of CURE: Compassion, Understanding, Respect, and Empathy. We believe in providing respectful and compassionate care for everyone who comes to us wanting to overcome their addiction to drugs or alcohol. We get to know each person we treat by performing an assessment and talking to them. This allows us to get to know the person behind the addiction and set treatment goals.
