Maintaining Recovery with the Help of Support Groups

Lake Ave Recovery is committed to helping individuals find lifelong recovery from substance use disorders through evidence-based treatment methods. We are experienced in the complexity of addiction and understand that it is a lifelong battle.

Successfully completing treatment is a remarkable accomplishment, but the journey does not end there. While in recovery, you will encounter temptations and triggers and it is important to recognize them and address them head-on. Triggers present themselves as stimuli that motivate an individual to engage in the addictive behavior they are recovering from. These stimuli can be a location, a person, or even a scent.

As a part of the maintenance of recovery, Lake Ave Recovery often encourages clients and alumni to participate in support groups in order to support their journey while also building fellowship.

12-Step Support Groups

Addiction is a devastating disease that has the capacity to take over every aspect of an individual’s life. Often, people in recovery turn to the idea of a higher power in order to heal aspects of their lives that are beyond their control. When used along with a proven treatment program, 12-step programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, have played an integral part in helping people suffering from substance use disorders recover through individual steps.

Alcoholics Anonymous, founded in the 1930s, is the first and most famous 12 Step program. Decades later, AA has proven to be effective not only for alcohol use disorder but also for a wide range of addictions and behavioral dysfunctions.

SMART Recovery Support Group

SMART Recovery (Self-Management and Recovery Training) is a program for people in similar recovery situations who need support during their recovery journey. This program takes a different approach than the typical 12-step program, or an AA meeting, as it is based on scientific evidence rather than on the belief in a higher power.  Attending SMART recovery is considered a form of relapse prevention.

Al-Anon

Al-Anon is a support group for people who have loved ones who are battling with or recovering from alcoholism. Al-Anon is a worldwide organization that provides a recovery program for relatives and friends of those with alcohol use disorder. Al-Anon follows the Twelve Steps by accepting and comforting the relatives of those suffering from alcoholism and acknowledging a higher power.
